Who are bikepackers? We are like many other human powered recreationalists. We seek inspiring, wide open landscapes with accessible, interconnected tracks. We combine some of the best parts of off-road cycling and backpacking by riding mountain bikes loaded with camping gear on dirt roads and trails. Sometimes we camp for a night, and sometimes we ride and camp for weeks or months at a time. By riding for multiple days, we can connect extensive trail systems and forest roads and see much more of the landscape than if we were on foot.
We look for routes that combine solitude, scenery, natural history, culture, challenge, inspiring riding, and the remote backcountry experience. We don’t need fancy facilities and we don’t mar the landscape - all we need are places to ride and camp. We have a particular affinity for unknown parts of the map, hotsprings, fire towers, trails less traveled, and resupplies at backcountry outposts. While the ideal bikepacking trip will look different among bikepackers, in essence, bikepackers are backcountry enthusiasts exploring the landscape in a multi-day experience by way of primarily dirt routes on mountain bikes.
