Bikepacking Roots launched our Route Test Team program in 2017 (under another name) to engage the broader bikepacking community in our route development projects. During the final stages of the Western Wildlands Route development, more than 40 riders fanned out across the nearly-complete route, and on the West Coast, Route Test Team members have been hard at work examining trail possibilities for the massive Orogenesis project. Our Route Test Team members operate in a wide range of capacities. Some help with preliminary on-the-ground reconnaissance of potential route alignments. Others ride "beta versions" of our routes and offer feedback, build awareness of the new routes in communities along the way, and identify cyclist-friendly businesses in communities.
In 2020, we've had more than 40 members of the Route Test Team engaged in the Midwest on the Northwoods Route, on the West Coast for continued Orogenesis development, and on the Pony Express Route. If you're interested in potentially joining our Route Test Team, please reach out or look for specific opportunities in our e-newsletters.
To date, the Route Test Team has engaged more than 150 volunteers to help create new routes of the highest caliber.
